OpenAI launches Atlas browser with integrated ChatGPT features to compete with Chrome

OpenAI has launched Atlas, a new web browser designed to integrate the ChatGPT AI assistant directly into the browsing experience. Atlas mirrors familiar Chrome-like features such as tabs, bookmarks, and an incognito mode, while adding an AI agent that can research, plan, and book activities based on natural language prompts. According to OpenAI executives, Atlas aims to avoid feeling like a mere add-on and instead provides a seamless AI-enhanced experience across every page. The browser is currently available for Apple Mac users, including those using the free ChatGPT version, with the AI agent feature reserved for Plus and Pro subscribers. There was no announced release date for Windows, iOS, or Android versions. The move signals a potential shift in how users search the web, as AI-assisted browsing could alter traffic patterns for websites and increase energy consumption due to AI processing. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman indicated there is more to come for Atlas, suggesting early-stage development.
