CRTC eliminates extra fees for modifying or cancelling internet and cellphone plans

Canada’s Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has announced that telecom companies will no longer be allowed to charge fees for changing, cancelling, or activating internet and cellphone plans. This move is intended to give consumers more flexibility and make it easier for them to switch to plans that better suit their needs without facing unexpected charges. The decision comes after public consultations following updates to the Telecommunications Act, where feedback indicated that additional fees could discourage Canadians from changing service providers. Vicky Eatrides, the chairperson and CEO of the CRTC, stated that the changes will empower consumers to have more control over their telecommunications services. In the coming months, the CRTC plans to improve tools for comparing and selecting the most suitable plans. These updates also strengthen the existing Consumer Protection Codes, including the Internet Code and the Wireless Code, reinforcing protections for Canadian consumers. The regulation is part of broader efforts to ensure fairness and transparency in the telecom sector, ultimately benefiting users by encouraging competition and making services more accessible.
