Company fined £55,000 for failing to implement age verification on deepfake nudification site

A company providing AI tools for nudifying images has been fined £55,000 by Ofcom for not implementing age verification measures, as required under the Online Safety Act. Ofcom’s investigation revealed that Itai Tech Ltd, the operator behind the ‘nudification’ website, did not have sufficient checks to prevent underage access. The company received a £50,000 fine for age verification lapses and an additional £5,000 for failing to respond to Ofcom’s requests for information. After the investigation began in May, the website became inaccessible from the UK, with the company also attempting to strike itself off the UK company register. Ofcom has made clear that age verification for online adult content is non-negotiable to protect children from harmful material. The regulator is also looking into other sites and apps that may not be complying with the law, including some well-known adult sites. If these companies fail to pay fines, Ofcom could take legal action to recover the money or limit access to their sites. The case highlights growing concerns over deepfake technology and its potential for abuse, with more scrutiny on ‘nudifying’ apps and AI tools that manipulate images.
