KDE Plasma 6.6 Improves Performance for High Refresh Rate Displays

The KDE Plasma 6.6 update brings significant improvements, particularly for users with displays above 60Hz. One of the most notable changes addresses a long-standing performance issue with animations in Plasma 6, which were previously capped at 60Hz. This fix, contributed by developer David Edmundson, synchronizes the Qt Quick animation driver with the render loop, resulting in smoother performance on higher refresh rate displays. This issue had been discussed for over a year, with a bug report tracking the problem since early 2024. Additionally, KWin in Plasma 6.6 will perform fewer atomic tests per compositing cycle, improving the efficiency of the compositing pipeline. Other improvements include systemd integration fixes, enhanced window recording features, and fixes for XWayland-based games, among others. The release also includes several UI and stability enhancements, such as UI polishing for remote control dialogs and memory leak fixes. With KDE Plasma 6.6, users can expect a much smoother and more responsive experience on modern high-refresh-rate monitors.
