Intel Announces Job Cuts and Spending Reductions Despite $7.9 Billion in Federal Grants

Intel has announced significant cuts to its spending and workforce, despite receiving $7.9 billion in federal grants aimed at boosting U.S. semiconductor production. The company plans to reduce its capital expenditures for 2025 by 10%, down to $18 billion, and eliminate management layers to improve efficiency. This follows a disappointing financial performance in Q1 2025, where Intel posted an $800 million loss. While Intel continues to trail behind rivals like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and Nvidia, it remains a key player in the U.S. government’s goal to bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Despite the setbacks, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan emphasized the company’s efforts to realign and position itself for future growth in the AI-driven market. Intel has also been awarded billions of dollars under the Chips Act, but the company faces significant challenges as it struggles to maintain its competitive edge. Additionally, the company is set to require employees to work in the office four days a week starting September 2025.
