Discord rolls out global age verification with default teen-safe settings

Discord announced that it will begin a global rollout of age verification starting in March, introducing significant changes to how users access content on the platform. Under the new system, all accounts will default to a “teen-appropriate” experience unless users verify that they are adults. This means unverified users will be restricted from accessing age-restricted servers and channels, speaking in Stage channels, or viewing content flagged as graphic or sensitive. Additional safety measures include warnings for friend requests from unfamiliar users and filtering direct messages from unknown contacts into a separate inbox.

Existing age-restricted servers will become inaccessible until users complete age verification, even if they were previously members. These servers will appear as obfuscated black screens until verification is complete, and users will also be prevented from joining new age-restricted servers without confirming their age. Discord frames this move as part of a broader international push for stronger child safety protections and compliance with emerging regulations.

To verify age, users can choose between facial age estimation using an AI-powered video selfie or submitting a government-issued ID through a third-party vendor. Discord states that facial age estimation happens entirely on-device and does not involve biometric identification, while ID images are deleted almost immediately after age confirmation. Users can appeal incorrect age estimates or switch verification methods if needed. The company also says it has changed vendors following a data breach last year that exposed age verification data.

In addition, Discord is introducing an age inference model that analyzes metadata such as user activity patterns and behavior. If the system has high confidence that a user is an adult, they may bypass manual age verification altogether. According to Discord, most users will not notice changes, as the system primarily affects access to explicit adult content. Still, the company acknowledges the risk of losing some users due to privacy concerns but plans to mitigate the impact over time.
