MIT Develops Assistive Robot to Help Elderly With Mobility and Fall Prevention
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have introduced E-BAR, a mobile robotic device designed to support elderly individuals with mobility challenges in their homes. E-BAR functions like robotic handlebars that follow users from behind, allowing them to walk independently or lean on the robot for support. It can bear a person’s full weight to help them move between sitting and standing, and even catch them in case of a fall using rapidly inflating airbags built into its arms. Unlike traditional harness-based systems, E-BAR is designed to offer unobstructed and dignified support, catering to elderly individuals who prefer not to wear wearable devices. The robot’s base is heavy and equipped with omnidirectional wheels, allowing safe and agile movement. The arms are made from articulated linkages and form a U-shape around the user, who can exit freely when desired. Laboratory tests with older adults showed that E-BAR can assist with tasks like picking up objects, reaching high shelves, and stepping out of a bathtub. Future improvements include automating the robot’s movement and making it more compact. This project aims to address the growing caregiver shortage and promote aging in place with safety and autonomy.
