Google Experiments with AI Mode Button to Enhance Search Interface

Google is experimenting with a redesign of its iconic Search homepage, replacing the long-standing ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button with a new feature called ‘AI Mode’. This experimental change is being tested within Google’s Labs environment and is not yet publicly available. ‘AI Mode’ is part of the company’s broader efforts to integrate more AI-powered features into its core services, following the rollout of the feature earlier in May 2025. A Google spokesperson confirmed the test to The Verge, noting that while it’s being trialed, it may never see a full public release.

This move comes just ahead of the annual Google I/O conference, where the tech giant is expected to reveal significant updates to its AI-driven search capabilities. The timing of this experiment may also be influenced by recent developments in user behavior; specifically, an Apple executive testified that Google searches on Safari dropped last month for the first time, with AI tools like ChatGPT being cited as contributing factors.

While Google rarely alters its minimalist homepage design, the competitive pressure from emerging AI platforms may be encouraging the company to adapt. The change symbolizes a broader shift in how users are expected to interact with search engines as AI continues to redefine web navigation and information retrieval.
