Volvo EX30 EV Destroyed in Johannesburg Fire Amid Global Battery Recall

A Volvo EX30 electric vehicle caught alight and was completely destroyed in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, on Thursday afternoon. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. This fire is believed to be linked to a global recall affecting over 40,000 EX30 units due to a potential fire risk from overheating battery packs. The recall, announced by Volvo in February 2026, involves replacing specific modules within the high-voltage battery packs to prevent overheating. In South Africa, 372 EX30 cars are affected, and Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that all corrective work will be done free of charge. Local owners were advised to limit their vehicle’s maximum charge level to 70% until a permanent technical solution is implemented. Grant Locke, MD of Volvo Car South Africa, confirmed that this is the first such incident in the country and stated that the cause of the fire will be investigated. The EX30, launched locally in 2024 with a starting price of R835,500, is one of the country’s best-selling electric vehicles, including the adventure-oriented EX30 Cross Country variant with raised suspension and all-wheel drive. Volvo is in the process of contacting affected owners to advise them on next steps.
