Overview of Fusion Startups That Have Raised More Than $100M in Funding

In recent years, nuclear fusion has progressed from a distant dream to a serious technological endeavor drawing major private investment. Advancements in AI, high-temperature superconducting magnets, and computing power have enabled more refined designs and experiments. A pivotal moment occurred in 2022 when a U.S. Department of Energy lab achieved scientific breakeven, generating more power from fusion than was used to initiate the reaction. This achievement catalyzed investor interest and innovation in fusion technology.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems leads with $2 billion raised, building the Sparc and Arc reactors using MIT-developed magnet technology. TAE Technologies, with $1.79 billion, employs a unique beam-stabilized plasma method. Helion, targeting power generation by 2028, has secured $1.03 billion and aims to deliver electricity directly to Microsoft. Pacific Fusion raised $900 million to pursue inertial confinement fusion using electromagnetic pulses.

Other key players include Shine Technologies ($778M), General Fusion ($440.53M), Tokamak Energy ($336M), Zap Energy ($327M), and Marvel Fusion ($161M), each pursuing diverse fusion approaches. Meanwhile, Proxima Fusion focuses on stellarators, and Xcimer is developing a next-gen laser system. First Light pivoted to become a tech supplier.

These companies collectively represent a global push toward commercial fusion, aiming to revolutionize energy by making clean, limitless power a reality within the next decade.
