A Comprehensive Review of Apple CarPlay Ultra’s Debut in Aston Martin DB12 Volante

Apple’s CarPlay Ultra makes its debut in the 2025 Aston Martin lineup, offering a significant leap in automotive user interface integration. Unlike traditional CarPlay, Ultra extends far beyond basic phone functions, providing control over climate, drive modes, and the full digital gauge cluster. This new integration requires vehicles to have a fully digital instrument cluster, and so far, only Aston Martin has implemented it, with Kia/Hyundai/Genesis and possibly Porsche planning to follow. The review process highlights a streamlined, though more involved, setup with extra consent screens due to increased vehicle-data sharing. While Apple reassures that personal data is not retained after disconnecting, the system still introduces new privacy considerations. CarPlay Ultra impresses by enabling seamless transitions between infotainment and vehicle controls, reducing the need for drivers to switch out of the system. However, some specific controls, like audio settings for the DB12’s advanced sound system, require using the native interface. The system showed minor glitches, including occasional latency in the gauge cluster needles and one instance where displays temporarily went dark, though it’s unclear if the fault lies with Apple or Aston Martin. One limitation noted is that only Apple Maps can be used for embedded navigation, with no support for Waze or Google Maps at cluster level. The reviewer finds that CarPlay Ultra’s enhancements are practical—especially for controlling driving and climate functions—but questions remain about regulatory standards and data privacy as automotive software grows more powerful. Future EV integration is anticipated to improve navigation and range accuracy even further.
