Pakistan Starts Second Phase of 5G Spectrum Auction with Major Telecoms Competing

Pakistan has entered the second round of its 5G spectrum auction in Islamabad, with the three leading telecom companies — Zong, Jazz, and Ufone — bidding aggressively for the crucial 2600 MHz frequency band. The government is offering several frequency bands at different base prices, including 700 MHz for $32.5 million, 1800 MHz for $16.8 million, 2100 MHz for $70 million, 2300 MHz for $10 million, 2600 MHz for $12.5 million, and 3500 MHz for $6.5 million per lot. After the first round, additional 110 MHz was made available due to high demand. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) increased the 2600 MHz bid price by 5% of its base value. The auction was inaugurated in the presence of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and other key officials. The ministers emphasized that the auction is a key step towards strengthening digital infrastructure, enabling better 4G and 5G connectivity, supporting online education, remote work, and fostering growth in AI, blockchain, and Web 3.0 sectors. Shaza Fatima Khawaja highlighted that Pakistan’s spectrum availability is currently below regional standards and expected improvements will double availability, especially in the five major cities within five to six months. Efforts are also underway to expand fibre networks, satellite internet, and international cable connections. The government has removed right of way charges, making Pakistan the first country in Asia to do so, aiming for better connectivity and lower internet costs. Overall, the auction is seen as a foundational move towards building a ‘Digital Nation Pakistan’.
