Kenya Engages TikTok to Boost Digital Safety Before Elections

Nairobi — Kenya is stepping up efforts to make TikTok safer as the country prepares for the next election cycle. CS William Kabogo of the Information, Communications and Digital Economy Ministry has stated that the government is in discussions with TikTok to enhance content moderation, improve age-verification processes, and strengthen systems that detect misinformation. Speaking after talks with TikTok executives ahead of the TikTok Safer Internet Summit 2026, Kabogo emphasised that Kenya welcomes technological innovation but insists that social media companies take responsibility for user safety. He highlighted that with over 17 million Kenyan users, TikTok plays a big role in the country’s Creative Economy, but the platform’s rapid growth could pose risks during politically sensitive times. The CS also sought assurances from TikTok about preventing coordinated disinformation campaigns, stressing that compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act and local regulations is mandatory. Additionally, Kabogo encouraged TikTok to invest more in local language moderation and expand its operational footprint in Kenya to better support African activities. He concluded that collaboration between the government and technology firms is crucial for creating a digital environment that balances innovation, economic growth, and public safety, positioning Kenya as a leader in responsible digital transformation.
