FBI warns of Scattered Spider hacking group targeting airlines and transportation sector

The FBI, along with cybersecurity firms Mandiant and Palo Alto Networks, have raised alarms about the Scattered Spider hacking group, which is now focusing on the airline and transportation industries. Scattered Spider, a mostly English-speaking collective of young hackers, is known for using social engineering and deception tactics, including phishing and threats to gain access to company networks. These attacks often involve stealing sensitive data and deploying ransomware. The FBI has warned that these hackers may target large corporations and their third-party IT providers, posing a risk to all sectors connected to the airline industry, including vendors and contractors. Recently, two major airlines reported cyberattacks linked to Scattered Spider: Hawaiian Airlines and WestJet. The latter, a Canadian airline, has been dealing with an ongoing cyberattack since June 13. This wave of attacks comes after similar incidents targeting other sectors such as retail and insurance. Scattered Spider’s previous targets include hotel chains, casinos, and tech giants, demonstrating the group’s increasing scope and sophistication. As the transportation sector becomes a new focus for cybercriminals, the FBI and cybersecurity experts urge heightened vigilance and security measures.
