Denmark and NATO to Use Autonomous AI Vessels for Maritime Surveillance

Denmark is set to enhance its surveillance capabilities in the Baltic and North Seas by deploying four uncrewed, AI-powered vessels designed to monitor the waters for various threats, including illegal activities and damage to critical underwater infrastructure. These vessels, known as ‘Voyagers,’ are equipped with advanced sensors and powered by renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. They will operate autonomously for extended periods, using onboard AI to process data and provide real-time insights on conditions both above and below the water’s surface. The vessels are part of a larger initiative to safeguard undersea assets like fiber-optic cables and power lines, which have become vulnerable targets following incidents involving damage to such infrastructure. The project will initially involve a three-month trial to test the vessels’ capabilities and their role in supporting Denmark and NATO’s broader maritime presence. The uncrewed vessels can perform tasks such as illegal fishing detection, border enforcement, and asset protection, ensuring that NATO and Denmark’s strategic interests are maintained in the region.
