O2 to Launch Satellite Connectivity for UK Phones in Rural Areas by 2026

Virgin Media O2 is set to introduce a groundbreaking satellite connectivity service for UK customers, allowing them to use their smartphones in remote areas without mobile signal starting in the first half of 2026. Partnering with Elon Musk’s Starlink, the service will offer automatic satellite coverage in rural regions where traditional mobile networks fail. This service, called O2 Satellite, will initially support messaging, maps, and location apps, but voice calls won’t be supported at launch due to Starlink’s current satellite capabilities. However, O2 is working to enable calls via WhatsApp, which uses data instead of traditional phone signal. This initiative follows similar tests by Vodafone, which had a successful satellite video call from a remote area in Wales. Starlink has a much larger network of satellites in orbit compared to Vodafone’s partner, AST. Despite technological advancements, the use of low Earth orbit satellites has faced criticism from astronomers who argue that they disrupt the night sky. The move comes as Ofcom has updated its regulations to enable satellite connectivity directly to smartphones, a shift that could close the mobile signal gap in the UK, particularly in rural and mountainous regions.
