Tanzanian Startup Flowteller Expands Mobile Money Services Beyond Cash

Dar es Salaam-based digital startup Flowteller has impressed at the 11th Harambe Evening startup pitch in Masaki, taking home 1.8 million shillings after being named top venture. The startup enables mobile money agents to provide services beyond simple cash transactions, helping traders deliver digital solutions directly to their local communities. Flowteller beat fellow startups Lipisha, which focuses on B2B payments and reconciliation tools, and Winvo, which supports SMEs through peer-to-peer financing of Local Purchase Orders (LPOs). The event, organized by Serengeti Angels with WakaPay and the Dutch Embassy, brought together entrepreneurs, investors, and key players in Tanzania’s tech ecosystem. WakaPay also showcased its platform for cross-border payments, allowing Tanzanian mobile money users to pay traders in Kenya directly with a low fee and competitive exchange rates. Organizers highlighted that such events reflect ongoing collaboration to strengthen Tanzania’s startup ecosystem. Attendees like real estate consultant Wilma Mallya expressed excitement about the innovative solutions from all three startups, showing growing tech and entrepreneurship potential in Tanzania.
