Ukraine Develops Drone Mothership Tactics for Long-Range FPV Strikes

Ukraine is advancing the use of drone ‘motherships’—larger unmanned aerial vehicles that transport and deploy smaller first-person view (FPV) drones into combat zones. These drone carriers are designed to extend the operational range of FPVs and reduce exposure to threats during deployment. According to ‘Michael’, commander of Ukraine’s Typhoon drone unit, this innovation is still in the developmental phase and involves constant adaptation based on battlefield feedback.

The carriers, both fixed-wing and rotary, can transport multiple FPVs but come with tradeoffs. Rotary-wing carriers fly low and are vulnerable to small arms and jamming, while fixed-wing versions can fly higher but risk detection by radar and anti-aircraft systems. Michael explains that managing multiple drones from a single carrier requires complex coordination due to video feed interference and communication link challenges.

Ukraine is also exploring automation, including ‘lock-on-target’ systems that allow FPVs to engage targets more precisely and independently, potentially bypassing enemy electronic countermeasures. These systems may transform the carrier into a launch platform for semi-autonomous drone strikes.

While still experimental, the use of drone motherships represents a significant shift in drone warfare, offering potential for rapid, long-range strikes and battlefield adaptability. However, their broader adoption remains uncertain, depending on further technical refinements and combat effectiveness.
