Tech Industry’s Efforts to Influence Trump Fall Flat Amid Tariffs and Regulation

In the early months of President Trump’s second term, major tech companies that invested heavily in gaining his favor are seeing little return. Despite millions in inauguration donations and symbolic gestures like black-tie events and high-profile meetings, companies like Apple, Amazon, Meta, Google, and Microsoft now face harsh policies. These include sweeping tariffs affecting supply chains and higher costs for building A.I. infrastructure, deep cuts to federal research funding for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, and immigration restrictions that could block skilled workers. Most significantly, the administration is pushing aggressive regulatory actions, including an imminent antitrust trial targeting Meta. These developments mark a stark contrast to the tech sector’s previous opposition during Trump’s first term. Hoping that a friendlier approach would align tech with other deregulated sectors, executives are now grappling with plummeting stock values and a more hostile policy environment. The combined market value of the major tech firms has dropped 22%, and the Nasdaq index is down 21%, illustrating how their attempts to secure influence have backfired under Trump’s unpredictable governance.
