Epic Games Reaches Settlement with Samsung Over Antitrust Case

Epic Games has resolved its antitrust case against Samsung, a legal battle that began last September. Epic alleged that Samsung, in coordination with Google, was blocking competing app stores by default on Samsung devices. The lawsuit focused on Samsung’s ‘Auto Blocker’ feature, which blocked downloads from any app store other than the Google Play Store or Samsung’s own Galaxy Store. Epic claimed this was a strategy to limit competition in app distribution. In response, Samsung and Google denied the claims. Samsung planned to vigorously contest the allegations, while Google called the case ‘meritless.’ The settlement, which follows almost a year after Epic launched its own mobile app store, marks a significant development in Epic’s ongoing efforts to challenge dominant app stores. Previously, Epic won an antitrust case against Google in 2023 over similar concerns about monopolistic practices, and a judge ordered Google to open its app store to competitors. The terms of the settlement with Samsung were not disclosed, and both companies declined to comment further.
