Garmin integrates Google Maps for turn-by-turn navigation on smartwatches

Garmin has launched a new Google Maps app for its smartwatches, now available in the Connect IQ Store. This update offers users turn-by-turn navigation directly on select Garmin devices such as the Venu, Forerunner, vívoactive, and fenix series. The app works by syncing with the Google Maps app on an Android smartphone. When users input a destination, their smartwatch provides notifications for each upcoming turn, allowing them to stay hands-free during walks, runs, or bike rides. Garmin’s Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, Susan Lyman, highlighted that the app is perfect for those who wish to explore new places, map runs, or cycle with ease. For pedestrians, the smartwatch gently vibrates to signal turns, providing safer navigation without the need to look down at a phone. Additionally, the app allows users to continue tracking fitness data, such as distance and heart rate, while following the directions. Garmin also offers the ability to sync activity data from the smartwatch with other Android health apps via Health Connect. The Google Maps app is free to download in the Connect IQ Store, which can be accessed through both Google Play and the Apple App Store.
