Gemini app surges to top of app stores following Nano Banana AI image editor release

Gemini’s mobile app has experienced remarkable growth following the launch of its Nano Banana AI image editor in August 2025. The model has been well-received by users, who praise its ability to facilitate complex edits and generate realistic images. In September, Gemini has achieved 12.6 million downloads on iOS, up from 8.7 million in August, and has reached the No. 1 spot on the U.S. App Store as of September 12, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Globally, the app ranks among the top five iPhone apps in 108 countries. On Android, Gemini jumped from No. 26 to No. 2 on Google Play, though ChatGPT retains the top position. Google highlights that 23 million new users have tried the app since the Nano Banana release, sharing over 500 million images. This surge in usage has translated into increased revenue, with Gemini generating $1.6 million in August alone, a 1,291% increase from January. Overall, the app has seen 103.7 million downloads on iOS this year and 185.4 million downloads since its Android launch in February 2024. The success demonstrates the growing demand for AI-powered creative tools and the impact of innovative features on user engagement and monetization.
