Google partners with UK researchers to explore applications of its Willow quantum processor
Google has announced a new collaboration with the UK’s National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) to allow researchers across the country to propose and test scientific uses for its advanced quantum chip, Willow. The initiative invites British scientists to submit applications describing how they would use the chip to tackle complex problems in disciplines like chemistry, materials science, medicine, and physics. The partnership aims to accelerate the practical development of quantum computing, a still-experimental field that uses principles of quantum mechanics to solve challenges beyond the reach of traditional computers. Professor Paul Stevenson of the University of Surrey described the news as a major opportunity for the UK’s research community, while also benefiting Google through shared expertise. Willow, first unveiled in 2024, represents one of the most sophisticated quantum processors yet developed, and part of Google’s larger race against competitors like Amazon and IBM to make quantum systems usable outside laboratories. According to Dr Michael Cuthbert, Director of the NQCC, this collaboration could produce breakthroughs with global impact and boost innovation in sectors from life sciences to fundamental physics. The UK currently hosts seven quantum computers and is heavily investing in the technology with a £670 million government fund, anticipating it could add £11 billion to the national economy by 2045. The broader vision is to create real-world applications and strengthen the UK’s role in shaping the future of quantum computing worldwide.
