OpenAI and Disney partner to enable Sora video generation with licensed characters

OpenAI has entered its first major licensing agreement to bring recognizable characters to life on its Sora video generation tool. The deal with Walt Disney is described as part of a broader effort to protect creators’ rights in the growing field of generative AI, addressing concerns about copyright, misinformation, and misuse. As part of a $1 billion investment by Disney in OpenAI, the collaboration will enable Sora users to generate and share videos featuring over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars, including icons like Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, and Luke Skywalker. The licensing spans three years and aims to balance creative innovation with IP protection. Disney plans to make some user-generated Sora videos available on Disney+. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman emphasized responsible collaboration to promote innovation that respects creativity and broadens audience reach, while Disney’s Bob Iger highlighted extending storytelling through generative AI in a controlled, creator-protective environment. Industry observers, such as Dan Coatsworth of AJ Bell, described the arrangement as mutually beneficial, potentially driving traffic to Sora and reinforcing Disney’s control over its franchises.
