Google I/O 2025 Preview: Upcoming Enhancements to Gemini AI and Android 16
Google I/O 2025, set for May 20–21 in Mountain View, is expected to spotlight key developments across Google’s ecosystem, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence and mobile software. A major highlight is the anticipated unveiling of an upgraded Gemini Ultra model, part of Google’s premium AI chatbot suite. The company may also introduce new subscription tiers, Premium Plus and Premium Pro, to complement the existing Gemini Advanced plan. These could offer additional AI capabilities, though details remain undisclosed.
In parallel, Google’s Project Astra and Project Mariner—initiatives centered around building AI agents with real-time, multimodal abilities and autonomous web interactions—are likely to take the stage. Code leaks hint at new features in Google’s AI Studio that align with these efforts.
Separately, Android 16 will be introduced at ‘The Android Show,’ a standalone event prior to I/O. This version emphasizes user experience improvements, including a new design language called Material 3 Expressive, enhanced notifications, Auracast support for Bluetooth, and expanded accessibility tools. Wear OS and Android XR are also slated for updates.
Additional sessions at I/O will address Chrome, Google Cloud, Google Play, and development tools. Google may surprise attendees with upgrades to its open AI models under Gemma and education tools like LearnLM, as well as a new ‘Video Overviews’ feature in NotebookLM using its Veo 2 video generator.
