Google Unveils AI Upgrades and Premium Plan to Counter Search Market Pressure
At its annual I/O conference in Mountain View, California, Google announced a series of artificial intelligence enhancements and a new premium subscription plan as part of its effort to remain competitive in the AI-driven digital landscape. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted that Google’s Gemini AI assistant now has over 400 million monthly active users and that a new ‘AI Mode’ is rolling out for U.S. users to provide AI-generated answers in Search. The centerpiece of the announcement was the launch of the ‘AI Ultra Plan,’ priced at $249.99 per month. This premium offering includes access to Google’s most advanced AI model ‘Deep Think,’ early access to experimental tools like Project Mariner and Astra, 30 TB of cloud storage, and an ad-free YouTube experience. The move comes amid increasing pressure from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, and a shifting user trend toward AI chatbots over traditional search engines. Google is also exploring new ways to integrate advertising into its AI-powered features, while continuing to invest heavily in AI, with $75 billion in forecasted capital expenditure for 2025. Despite the innovation push, Google’s market dominance is under scrutiny due to antitrust cases and declining search usage on platforms like Safari. The tech giant insists AI is expanding search use cases rather than replacing them outright.
