Google Meet Introduces Real-Time English-to-Spanish Voice Translation with AI

Google has unveiled a groundbreaking real-time voice translation feature in Google Meet, announced during its annual I/O event. This new capability, available starting May 20, 2025, allows users subscribed to the Google One AI Premium plan to have their spoken English translated into Spanish live during video calls. The feature uses an advanced AI audio model that replicates the user’s voice characteristics, such as tone, intonation, and emotion, in the translated language, making the experience feel more natural and personal.

Currently, the tool supports English-to-Spanish translations, with plans to add more languages soon. The translated voice is heard at normal volume, while the speaker’s original voice remains audible at a lower volume, creating a simultaneous interpretation effect. Google likens the system to a next-generation interpreter that uses the speaker’s own voice for translated output.

This technology could significantly benefit users in diverse scenarios, from coordinating travel plans with an Airbnb host to engaging in multilingual meetings or international research. While the tool is still in beta and limited to AI Premium subscribers, Google intends to expand testing to Workspace customers later in the year. The innovation promises to enhance global communication, although it raises broader questions about the diminishing need for traditional language learning.
