Google Launches AI Mode in Search, Shifting User Experience and Publisher Strategy

Google has officially launched its AI Mode in Search for all users in the United States. This chatbot-style feature aims to answer complex or conversational queries by generating full, AI-driven responses. These answers are based on Google’s indexing of the open web and include links to original sources. AI Mode evolves from Google’s earlier AI Overviews, which were met with criticism due to frequent inaccuracies and bizarre recommendations. The newer system uses a customized version of the Gemini 2.5 AI model that dissects questions into multiple sub-queries, enabling richer and more comprehensive responses.

Despite improvements, issues around factual accuracy remain. During WIRED’s testing, AI Mode generated responses that included misinformation, such as discredited racial IQ statistics. Google stated it is continuously working on improving accuracy and factuality.

The AI Mode rollout is expected to impact digital publishers and SEO strategies significantly. Experts warn that lower click-through rates from AI answers could harm publishers who rely on web traffic, though some marketers note that the traffic that does reach them is more qualified and engaged. Some companies, like Conde Nast, are forming content partnerships with AI providers, while others remain wary of Google’s growing dominance. As generative AI reshapes online search, publishers and users alike must adapt to this changing digital landscape.
