Preview of Android 16’s Upcoming UI Updates Based on Material 3 Expressive Design

Google is preparing a substantial redesign of Android’s interface as part of its shift toward the Material 3 Expressive design system. Though these changes are currently hidden in Android 16 Beta 4 and not yet active by default, they give a strong preview of what to expect in future updates. Major visual upgrades include new status bar icons, background blur effects across various interface elements, and revamped Quick Settings and notifications panels. The blur effect adds depth and modernity to the UI, resembling features found in third-party Android systems like Xiaomi’s HyperOS.

The lock screen is also getting a cleaner and more compact layout, with repositioned date, weather, and notifications, along with a dynamic notification chip system. Visual changes extend to the PIN entry screen, which now uses larger, themed elements, and the volume panel, which has swapped out pill-shaped sliders for thinner ones with handles. The media output interface has been refined to better organize connected devices.

In addition, Android’s Settings app is being revamped with colorful icons, card-based sections, and Material 3 toggles. New icon shapes for the home screen and app drawer are also in development. While the exact release timeline for these features is unknown, more details are expected during Google I/O 2025.
