Google to Address PWM Dimming Issues in Future Pixel Displays, Starting with Pixel 10

Google has acknowledged a long-standing concern among some users regarding the Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) dimming rate of its Pixel smartphones. PWM dimming is a technique used in OLED displays to control screen brightness, but lower frequencies can cause eye strain or even illness for sensitive individuals. While high-end competitors such as Honor and Samsung have already adopted higher PWM frequencies—up to 3840Hz and 492Hz respectively—Google’s Pixel 8 Pro lags behind at just 246Hz.

In a recent statement to Android Central, Google revealed it is actively investigating display improvements for users sensitive to PWM effects, strongly suggesting that the Pixel 10 will be the first to feature a higher dimming rate. Though Google has not explicitly confirmed these changes, it has indicated that more updates will be shared later this year.

Improving PWM rates typically requires hardware modifications, making it likely that the Pixel 10 series will include updated display components rather than just software tweaks. The new hardware is expected to reduce eye strain and improve viewing comfort for affected users. The Pixel 10 is anticipated to launch around August 2025, when further details will likely emerge.
