UK Competition Authority Grants Google Strategic Market Status, Raising Regulatory Control
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has designated Google as having ‘strategic market status’ in general search and search advertising services, given its dominant position with over 90% of UK searches conducted on its platform. This status empowers the CMA to exert greater influence over how Google operates within the UK. An ongoing inquiry initiated in January is examining Google’s AI features, excluding its Gemini AI assistant but including other AI functionalities like AI Overviews. The CMA aims to foster competition to drive innovation, investment, and economic growth. Potential regulatory remedies being considered include changes to Google’s search engine, such as introducing ‘choice screens’ and increasing publishers’ powers. However, Google warns that such regulations could stifle innovation, slow product launches during this critical period of AI advancement, and lead to higher prices for consumers. Google also highlights that the UK currently benefits from early access to popular products partly due to its less restrictive regulatory environment compared to other countries where costly regulations have negatively impacted business growth. The CMA plans to begin consultations on these remedies soon, sparking debate between regulators focused on competition and a government pursuing a ‘growth first’ agenda.
