Google Partners with Energy Dome to Scale CO2-based Energy Storage for Clean Power
Google has entered a long-term partnership with Energy Dome to scale up its CO2 battery technology, which could store excess clean energy for 8 to 24 hours. This partnership aims to bridge the gap between renewable energy production and consumption, an essential component in addressing the intermittency of solar and wind energy. The CO2-based storage system works by compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide, later using it to generate electricity. Unlike traditional energy storage systems, such as lithium-ion batteries, this technology does not rely on scarce materials like lithium or copper, offering a promising alternative to strengthen energy security. Google’s involvement with Energy Dome follows its broader clean energy initiatives, including collaborations on fusion energy, small modular nuclear reactors, and geothermal power projects. Although the CO2 storage system is still in its early stages, with demonstration projects in Italy and plans for a 10-hour storage project in Wisconsin, the technology offers a unique potential to support local grids with renewable energy, creating a more sustainable energy future.
