Google’s Overlapping AI Product Names Cause User Confusion Amid Rapid Expansion

At Google I/O 2025, the company unveiled a host of new AI products and features, but the event highlighted a growing problem: the confusing and overlapping names of Google’s AI offerings. Products like Deep Think, Deep Search, Google AI Pro (formerly Gemini Advanced), and AI Ultra were introduced, alongside others such as Gemini in Chrome, AI Mode in Search, Project Starline (now Google Beam), Gems, Jules, Astra, and Aura. Many of these products have similar or overlapping functions, making it difficult for users and even tech experts to distinguish between them. The article humorously notes that Google at least avoided reusing the name Bard, its previous chatbot moniker, but points out that the naming chaos has returned. For example, Gemini 2.5 Pro Deep Think is designed for complex math and coding, while Deep Search is part of AI Mode in Search. Features like Search Live and Gemini Live both let users interact with the real world through their cameras, yet are separate products. Other tools, such as Veo (image generation), Flow (video editing), and Flow TV (AI-generated video sharing), add to the crowded landscape. The author argues that this confusion is a result of Google’s internal structure, where separate teams develop similar technologies without coordination, leading to a proliferation of products with overlapping features and inconsistent branding. The article concludes by acknowledging the pressure Google faces from competitors and the relentless pace of AI development, but calls for greater clarity in product naming to help users navigate the expanding ecosystem.
