Harrods warns of data breach involving customer contact details

Harrods has informed its customers that their personal data may have been compromised due to an IT systems breach. The breach occurred at a third-party provider, and data such as names and contact details of some online customers were taken. Harrods assured customers that no payment information or passwords were stolen. In a statement, the luxury department store described the incident as an ‘isolated’ event, emphasizing that the breach was contained and is being investigated. The company is working with the third-party provider to take necessary actions and has informed the relevant authorities. It confirmed that Harrods’ internal systems were not impacted by the breach. This incident is not related to a cyber attack that occurred in May, where unauthorized attempts to access the store’s systems led to temporary restrictions on internet access. That cyber attack was later linked to a loosely associated hacker group involved in high-profile breaches of companies like Marks & Spencer and the Co-op. Additionally, the National Crime Agency arrested four individuals earlier this year in connection with these attacks. The current breach has highlighted the growing concerns over cyber security, as attacks increasingly have real-world impacts. Experts stress the importance of businesses securing their systems against such breaches.
