HDMI 2.2 Released with Ultra96: What It Means for Your Setup

The HDMI Forum has officially released the HDMI 2.2 specification, which brings major updates for video resolutions, maximum bandwidth, and new cable designations. With HDMI 2.2, users can enjoy resolutions up to 16K at 60Hz and 12K at 120Hz, with a bandwidth increase to 96Gbps. The spec also supports 4K at 240Hz and 8K at 60Hz, ensuring compatibility with high-performance content and displays. Ultra96 is a new cable designation introduced with HDMI 2.2, designed to support the higher bandwidth of up to 96Gbps. It serves as a successor to the current Ultra High Speed cables, which are limited to 48Gbps. This new designation will help consumers select products that fully support HDMI 2.2’s higher bandwidth capabilities. While 16K displays are not yet available in the consumer market, the HDMI 2.2 spec prepares for future technologies, ensuring manufacturers have a solid standard to build upon. Additionally, the HDMI 2.2 spec introduces the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) to improve audio-video synchronization in systems where the signal travels through multiple devices. Although 16K content and displays are not commonplace, HDMI 2.2 aims to future-proof systems as frame rates and resolutions continue to evolve.
