WhatsApp introduces AI-generated summaries for missed messages in private chats

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that leverages Meta’s AI to generate summaries of private messages that users may have missed. This feature, currently rolling out in English in the United States, provides a concise bulleted list of unread messages in a chat, saving users the time of scrolling through long threads. WhatsApp emphasizes that this AI-powered summary is an optional feature and is disabled by default. Users can turn it on or off according to their preferences. Additionally, WhatsApp offers privacy controls that prevent the AI from processing messages in group chats if desired. The company assures users that its ‘Private Processing’ technology will ensure that no third party, including Meta, will have access to these summaries. WhatsApp’s AI message summaries are part of a broader effort by Meta to integrate artificial intelligence into its platforms, which has included features like real-time image generation and the ability to ask questions to Meta’s AI. However, Meta’s AI implementation has been met with some user frustration, especially due to the persistent Meta AI button in the app and the introduction of ads, a shift from the app’s original vision. The effectiveness and accuracy of the AI message summaries remain to be fully seen.
