HMD Global Scales Back US Operations, Stops Selling Nokia Devices
HMD Global, the Finnish company behind Nokia-branded phones, has announced a major reduction of its operations in the US market, effectively halting the sale of both HMD and Nokia devices. The company attributed this decision to a ‘challenging geopolitical and economic environment,’ likely hinting at the effects of international tariffs. While HMD didn’t confirm a full departure from the US, its website no longer offers devices for direct purchase, and the ‘Where to buy’ buttons are broken. However, customers can still buy Nokia phones from third-party retailers like Amazon. HMD has assured that it will honor warranties and offer support for existing devices. Despite its limited success in the US, including only four HMD-branded smartphones released in the country, the company remains committed to global expansion, especially in other markets. HMD’s venture into its own branded products, like the Skyline and unique collaborations such as the Barbie flip phone, highlights its shifting strategy. This move reflects ongoing challenges in the tech industry, especially amid global economic uncertainties.
