Apple Develops Custom iPhone-Based Camera Module for Formula One Filmmaking

Apple faced a unique challenge when filmmakers Joseph Kosinski and Claudio Miranda wanted authentic point-of-view racing footage for their upcoming Formula One movie. Standard cinema cameras are too large and heavy for F1 cars, and the existing onboard broadcast cameras do not meet cinematic standards for resolution and color grading. To solve this, Apple engineered a custom camera module using an iPhone camera sensor and an A-series chip, likely from the iPhone 15 Pro. The module was designed to match the size and weight of the standard F1 broadcast camera, ensuring it wouldn’t affect the car’s performance. Internally, it featured an iPhone battery, a neutral density filter for better exposure control, and ran a custom version of iOS with specialized firmware. This allowed the filmmakers to record in log format using Apple’s ProRes codec, providing editors with greater flexibility in post-production. The camera could be controlled via a custom iPad app connected through USB-C, enabling real-time adjustments to settings like frame rate and white balance. The module was tested to withstand the extreme conditions of F1 racing and was used in real races during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. This innovation not only enhanced the visual authenticity of the film but also contributed to new features in the iPhone 15 Pro, such as log encoding and ACES color workflow support. While most iPhone users won’t utilize these advanced features, Apple’s collaboration with filmmakers demonstrates its commitment to creative professionals and technological advancement in cinematography.
