Google Enhances AI-driven Fraud Detection and Security Efforts in India

Google has announced the expansion of its AI-powered fraud detection and security operations in India, a critical market outside of the U.S. The company introduced its ‘Safety Charter’ to tackle the increasing digital fraud in the country. According to government data, frauds related to India’s UPI (Unified Payments Interface) system surged by 85% in the previous year, reaching 11 billion Indian rupees ($127 million). In response, Google has established a Security Engineering Center in India, its fourth such facility globally, to work alongside local communities, businesses, and government bodies. This center focuses on tackling online scams, securing enterprises and infrastructure, and promoting responsible AI. Google has already made strides with its AI-based fraud detection tools like Scam Detection in Google Messages, which helps protect users from millions of fraudulent messages, and Play Protect, which blocks high-risk apps. The company also continues to work with the Indian government on cybercrime awareness initiatives. Despite growing misuse of AI in cybercrimes like phishing, Google is committed to developing frameworks to prevent such abuses and to building multi-layered security for its platforms.
