AI Language Solutions in India: Bridging Communication Gaps for Delivery Drivers and More

Vineet Sawant, a delivery driver in Mumbai, struggled with language barriers during his early days on the job. His first language is Marathi, and he finds English challenging to read. This difficulty led to errors and delays in his work. However, a year ago, Zepto, his employer, partnered with Reverie Language Technologies to provide an AI-driven translation service on its app. Now, drivers like Sawant can receive delivery instructions in their native language, making the job easier and reducing mistakes. This innovation addresses a significant issue in India, where 22 official languages and hundreds of dialects exist, and many people are excluded from the digital revolution due to language barriers. India’s linguistic diversity presents a challenge for AI systems, especially when training models for less common languages. Bhashini, a government project launched in 2022, is working to create high-quality datasets for AI to better serve India’s diverse population. The project has already made significant progress, hosting over 350 AI models and working with various government departments. As AI language models continue to evolve, they may help bridge gaps in education, healthcare, and governance, ensuring wider accessibility. This is especially important for rural areas, where voice-enabled services in local languages could make a significant impact.
