AAA Test Reveals Frequent Human Intervention in Driver Assistance Systems

AAA recently conducted a real-world test of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on highways in Los Angeles, focusing on systems like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping. The test involved five vehicles, covering 342 miles over 16 hours of driving in heavy traffic. The results showed that these systems often required human intervention, with an average of one notable event every 9 minutes. The most common issues involved other cars cutting into the driver’s lane, which occurred roughly once every 8.6 miles. Lane centering and failure to resume after stopping also led to frequent interventions. The test found that hands-on systems, which require drivers to keep their hands on the wheel, needed more interventions (every 2.3 miles on average) than hands-off systems (every 7.2 miles). The study also noted that the hands-off systems had to remind drivers to put their hands on the wheel about every 5.5 miles. AAA emphasized that while these systems can be helpful, they should not replace an engaged driver, urging people to remain alert and informed about how their vehicles’ features work. They also recommend improving the responsiveness of systems, especially when reacting to lane changes and cut-ins.
