Microsoft Investigates SSD Failures Linked to Recent Windows 11 Updates

A bug in recent Windows 11 24H2 updates is reportedly causing issues for some SSD and HDD models, especially those with Phison NAND controllers. The problem, which emerged after the KB5063878 and KB5062660 updates, involves drives disappearing from the operating system during heavy write operations, such as writing large or many files. In some cases, the drives remain inaccessible even after a restart. Phison NAND controllers, particularly DRAM-less models, appear to be more prone to these issues, with similar problems also affecting various other SSD brands, including SanDisk and Corsair. Microsoft is aware of the reports and is working on a fix, while Phison has engaged with the company to address the problem. Until a solution is found, users are advised to avoid writing large files or performing multiple heavy write tasks at once. Affected drives may be restored by using third-party tools to recover partition information, but data loss could still occur in some cases. Affected users are encouraged to stay updated on fixes from Microsoft and Phison.
