ReactOS Achieves Major Compatibility with Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD GPU Drivers

ReactOS, an open-source operating system that aims to achieve compatibility with Microsoft Windows applications and drivers, has announced a significant milestone in hardware support. The project’s developers have achieved roughly 90% compatibility with GPU drivers originally designed for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. This improvement is primarily due to new implementations of the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework (KMDF) and Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM), which have enhanced driver stability and performance.

Before these updates, many proprietary graphics drivers either failed to load or caused system crashes. In the latest nightly builds of version 0.4.16, ReactOS has demonstrated reliable operation with drivers from major GPU manufacturers—including Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD—on a wide range of real hardware. The operating system has successfully booted with drivers for popular graphics cards such as the Intel GMA 945, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS and GTX 750 Ti, and AMD Radeon HD 7530G. Testing also confirmed working 2D and 3D acceleration, audio, and networking on systems using the NVIDIA Quadro 1000M and other legacy GPUs.

A key technical advancement behind these improvements came from a recently merged patch to the memory management subsystem, which reduced crashes during GPU initialization and enhanced overall driver communication. The achievement represents a major step toward making ReactOS a more viable drop-in replacement or testing environment for older Windows-compatible hardware, benefiting developers and retro computing enthusiasts alike.
