A.P. Police Advises Public to Avoid Malicious APKs and Cyber Fraud Links

The Andhra Pradesh Police Headquarters has issued an advisory cautioning the public about the growing threat of APK-based frauds. Cyber criminals are increasingly using malicious apps disguised as PDFs or other files sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or Telegram to steal sensitive information such as bank details, OTPs, and personal data. Common lures include fake traffic challans, KYC update requests, electricity bill warnings, government loan approvals, wedding invitations, and fraudulent customer care calls. Victims are often threatened with service disconnection, bank account suspension, or driving licence cancellation to compel immediate action. The police have urged citizens not to download or click on suspicious APK files, and strictly advised against sharing UPI PIN, ATM PIN, CVV, or OTP with anyone, even if the caller claims to be a bank official. In case a malicious app is accidentally installed, users should immediately turn off mobile data and WiFi, notify their bank to block transactions, and change net banking passwords and UPI PIN. Complaints can be lodged on cybercrime.gov.in or by contacting the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930. The advisory emphasises vigilance and the importance of following cyber safety protocols to prevent financial and personal data loss.
