iOS 26 Introduces Smart Display Zoom to Optimize CarPlay Layout

Apple has introduced a new feature in iOS 26 called ‘Smart Display Zoom’ for CarPlay. This setting automatically adjusts the user interface to better fit the shape and dimensions of a vehicle’s dashboard screen. When enabled, the interface elements shrink, making room for an additional row of app icons, thereby improving screen utilization without compromising usability. This functionality is especially beneficial for drivers with larger or uniquely-shaped displays in their vehicles. The setting was showcased by CarPlay engineer Olivia Hess during WWDC 2025, who emphasized its configurability within the CarPlay Settings app.

To access Smart Display Zoom, users must have an iPhone running iOS 26, currently available in developer beta. A public beta is expected in July 2025, with a general release planned for September for iPhone 11 and newer models. Beyond Smart Display Zoom, iOS 26 will also bring numerous enhancements to CarPlay, such as a new ‘Liquid Glass’ design language, Live Activities on the Dashboard, a widget-focused screen, multi-touch navigation capabilities, and even the ability to stream video from an iPhone via AirPlay—limited to parked vehicles for safety. These updates collectively signal Apple’s focus on enhancing the in-car digital experience while maintaining safety and customization.
