Jack Dorsey invests in nonprofit to explore open-source social media tools

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has invested $10 million into a nonprofit called ‘and Other Stuff,’ which aims to experiment with open-source social media tools and protocols like Nostr and ActivityPub. This collective, formed in May 2025, includes key figures from the tech industry, such as Twitter’s first employee Evan Henshaw-Plath and other former engineers from various platforms. The focus of the nonprofit is to develop social media tools that are decentralized, open, and free from corporate control. Dorsey has long been critical of the evolution of social media, including the way Twitter was run, and believes open protocols are key to the future of digital communication. The team is working on a variety of tools, including an app builder for Nostr-based social apps, voice message apps, and secure private messaging platforms. Dorsey’s involvement is driven by a desire to push the internet in a more open and decentralized direction, similar to the ideals behind Bitcoin. In addition to app development, the group is also drafting a ‘Social Media Bill of Rights,’ which aims to establish user rights around privacy, security, and self-governance for platforms. Dorsey sees this initiative as a way to address the corporate and government pressures that have shaped traditional social media platforms.
