Linux achieves 5% desktop market share in the US

For the first time, Linux has surpassed the 5% mark in the desktop operating system market in the United States, according to StatCounter Global Stats for June 2025. This milestone, highlighted by OSTechNix, marks a significant achievement for the open-source community, which has long been working towards greater desktop adoption. Linux’s growth has been gradual but consistent, with major increases in recent years: from 1% to 2% in eight years, 2% to 3% in 2.2 years, and 3% to 4% in just under a year. The most recent jump, from 4% to 5%, shows continued momentum in the open-source ecosystem. This growth has been attributed to various factors, including the growing dissatisfaction with Windows, particularly Windows 11’s intrusive features like forced cloud accounts and ads. While some argue that the growth rate is not truly exponential, it’s clear that Linux is gaining traction as a mainstream desktop option. The increase in Linux adoption is further supported by its presence on gaming consoles like the Steam Deck, which has brought more users to the platform. Despite still being a small share of the market, Linux is positioning itself as a serious contender for desktop environments, offering customizability, privacy, and freedom from proprietary software. The increasing number of Linux-friendly manufacturers and its growing user base suggest that Linux could continue its upward trajectory.
