Roblox CEO Advises Parents to Restrict Access if Concerned About Safety

Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki has stated that parents who are uncomfortable with their children using the platform should simply not allow them to play. The gaming giant, which is particularly popular among 8- to 12-year-olds in the UK, has faced criticism for exposing minors to potentially harmful content. Despite this, Baszucki reassures users that the company is dedicated to safety, implementing AI-driven moderation and other security measures.

While parental controls exist, concerns remain regarding the platform’s ability to fully safeguard young users. A BBC investigation demonstrated that its filters can be bypassed, allowing inappropriate conversations to occur. However, Baszucki argues that the findings actually highlight the relative safety of Roblox compared to other platforms.

The Online Safety Act, set to be enforced in the UK in April, will introduce stricter regulations on tech companies, particularly regarding child protection. Despite ongoing safety improvements, some experts and parents remain skeptical about Roblox’s ability to effectively monitor its vast user base. The company continues to expand, boasting over 80 million daily active users and ambitions to evolve into a Metaverse-like virtual world.

Baszucki maintains confidence in the platform’s safeguards and encourages parental involvement in monitoring children’s activities. Ultimately, he emphasizes that parents should decide whether Roblox is appropriate for their kids.
