Showmax Announces Exit from Kenyan Market
Showmax, the video streaming service owned by MultiChoice and recently acquired by French media company Canal+, has announced plans to exit the Kenyan market. The company said the decision came after a detailed review by its Board, citing the need to focus on strengthening its overall digital offerings and ensuring long-term sustainability amid growing competition in the streaming industry. For now, subscribers will not face any immediate disruption and can continue enjoying content without taking action. Showmax launched in Kenya in 2016, becoming the first international streaming platform to integrate M-Pesa payments and local currency billing. Over the years, it invested in local productions like ‘The Real Housewives of Nairobi’ and ‘Pepeta’, and also expanded into sports streaming, offering content from La Liga and the English Premier League. The company has promised to provide more information on timelines and transition plans soon to ensure subscribers experience a smooth exit process.
