Kolkata Emerges as Major IT Hub with Rapid Growth
Kolkata is witnessing a significant transformation in its IT landscape, particularly in areas like Sector V and New Town, which were once known for their serene water bodies and gardens. Today, these zones are dominated by modern office towers, tech parks, and corporate campuses, hosting global IT companies, BPOs, and fintech start-ups. This growth has earned Kolkata the nickname ‘Silicon Valley of the East.’ Over the past seven years, the IT sector in Kolkata has expanded to around 1,500 firms, employing over 260,000 professionals. According to the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), the city’s IT and IT-enabled Services exports have more than doubled from Rs 6,684 crore in FY18 to Rs 14,268 crore in FY25. This surge is attributed to the excellent infrastructure and the availability of a skilled workforce, including talent that returned to India during the Covid period. Despite these impressive developments, the rapid expansion comes with challenges, including managing urban infrastructure, ensuring sustainable growth, and maintaining the quality of work-life balance for employees. Nevertheless, Kolkata’s IT boom highlights its rising importance in India’s technology ecosystem and its appeal to both domestic and international IT players.
